Silver nitrate
Silver nitrate (AgNO3) is a colorless, water‑soluble salt of silver(I) used in photography, medicine, analytical chemistry and organic synthesis. It is light‑sensitive and an oxidizing agent.

Silver nitrate is highly soluble in water and acts as a mild oxidizing agent. It reacts readily with halide ions to give insoluble silver halide precipitates: AgCl (white), AgBr (cream), and AgI (pale yellow). These light‑sensitive silver salts are central to traditional photographic processes. On contact with organic reducing agents or light, silver nitrate decomposes to metallic silver, producing dark stains on skin and surfaces.
Preparation and chemical behavior
Commercially, silver nitrate is produced by dissolving metallic silver in nitric acid, which oxidizes silver to the Ag+ ion and yields nitrate anions. It forms complexes with ligands (for example ammonia forms the diamminesilver(I) complex) and can precipitate as silver oxide with strong base. In organic chemistry it is used as a Lewis acid, a halide abstractor, and a catalyst in certain transformations.
Uses and applications
Historically known as "lunar caustic," silver nitrate played a key role in early photography through formation of silver halides. Today it remains useful in analytical chemistry for qualitative and quantitative tests for halides and in titrations (for example, Mohr titration). In medicine it is employed in controlled topical applications as an antiseptic and cauterant (silver nitrate sticks) and has been used for neonatal prophylaxis against eye infections in the past. Laboratory and industrial uses include preparing other silver compounds and as a reagent in synthetic chemistry.
Safety and environmental notes
Silver nitrate is corrosive and can cause chemical burns; contact with skin or tissues often produces a persistent gray‑black stain caused by deposited metallic silver. Chronic exposure to silver compounds may lead to argyria, a condition of permanent skin discoloration. Silver ions are toxic to aquatic organisms, so spill containment and proper disposal are important.
