Overview

Sherburne County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It lies northwest of the core Twin Cities metropolitan area and is often considered part of the broader Minneapolis–Saint Paul region. The county seat is Elk River. According to the 2010 U.S. census, the population was 88,499; the county has experienced steady growth as suburban and exurban development expanded outward from the Twin Cities.

Geography and natural features

Sherburne County covers a mix of landscapes: river valleys, glacial lakes, agricultural land and wooded areas. Several rivers and lakes provide habitat for fish and waterfowl, and parts of the county include sandy soils and prairie remnants. Public lands and conservation areas protect important wetlands and wildlife corridors.

History and development

The county was organized in the mid-19th century during Minnesota's territorial and early statehood period and is named for a 19th-century jurist and territorial official. Its early economy centered on agriculture, river transport and small-town trade. Over time, improved roads and proximity to Minneapolis–Saint Paul encouraged residential growth and diversified local industries.

Communities, economy and demographics

Major population centers include Elk River along with smaller cities and townships spread across the county. The local economy combines farming, light manufacturing, retail and services; many residents commute to jobs in the Twin Cities region. Demographic trends since 1990 have shown suburban expansion, new housing developments and a growing, more diverse population.

Government, services and transportation

The county government provides typical services — courts, public safety, road maintenance, parks and social services — administered from the county seat. Transportation is oriented toward regional connections with state and U.S. routes and commuter links to the metropolitan area, supporting both local traffic and longer commutes.

Recreation, conservation and notable places

Sherburne County contains important conservation areas, including the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, which protects wetlands, prairie and forest habitats and offers opportunities for birdwatching, hunting and environmental education. Local parks, river access points and lakes make the county a destination for boating, fishing and outdoor recreation.
