Overview

Sheridan County is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Wyoming. The county seat and largest city is Sheridan, which serves as the cultural and economic center. According to the 2010 census, the county had a population of 29,116; the area combines small-city services with wide open rural spaces and mountain access.

Geography and environment

Sheridan County stretches from high ridges of the Bighorn Mountains down to broad prairie and river valleys. Elevations and terrain vary sharply, giving rise to diverse habitats—conifer forests in the mountains, sagebrush and grasslands on the plains, and riparian corridors along rivers such as the Tongue. This variety supports ranching, wildlife, and outdoor recreation activities such as hiking, fishing, hunting and winter sports.

History and development

The county developed during the late 19th century as settlement and transportation expanded across the Rocky Mountain region. It was named in honor of Union General Philip H. Sheridan, a figure associated with post–Civil War western military activity and frontier history. Early economic life centered on stock ranching, timber, and services for migrants and settlers; over time tourism, recreation, and energy development have also played roles.

Economy and land use

Ranching and agriculture remain important, with cattle and forage production prominent on the plains. Energy extraction and forestry have influenced local economies at various times, and the proximity of national forestland supports outdoor-based businesses and seasonal tourism. The city of Sheridan provides regional medical, educational, retail and cultural services for surrounding rural communities.

Communities and attractions

The county contains a mix of incorporated towns and smaller census-designated places. Notable communities include:

Visitors are drawn to mountain trails, scenic drives into the Bighorn range, and historic sites that reflect the region's frontier past. Conservation lands and state or federal recreation areas provide year-round opportunities for nature-based activities.
