Overview
A shadow is the region of relative darkness that appears on a surface when an object blocks a light source. The visible outline of a shadow is often called a silhouette; it corresponds to the shape of the occluding object as seen from the light source. Shadows are everyday phenomena produced whenever illumination is at least partially obstructed, and they provide visual cues about the position, size, and form of objects.

How a shadow looks depends principally on the characteristics of the light source and the geometry involved. A small, compact light source tends to produce a sharp-edged, well-defined shadow. An extended or diffuse source produces softer edges and a gradual transition from light to dark. When an object blocks part of an extended source, two regions are commonly identified:
- Umbra: the region of complete shadow where the light source is entirely blocked.
- Penumbra: the partially shaded area where only part of the light source is obscured.
- Antumbra: a region that can occur for some geometries where the occluding object appears entirely inside the apparent disk of the light source, producing a ring-like effect beyond the umbra.

Physical influences
Atmospheric scattering, diffraction and surface roughness affect shadow appearance. On cloudless days with a strong sun, shadows are usually sharp; in overcast conditions, the diffuse sky light reduces or eliminates distinct shadows. In near-vacuum environments such as outer space, shadows appear particularly crisp because there is little intervening scattering of light.
