Alarcón worked both as a director and a screenwriter. During the 1970s and afterward he spent significant time working within Soviet film institutions and collaborated with filmmakers and producers there. His cinema often combined narrative drama with documentary sensibilities and focused on subjects such as exile, political conflict, memory and social change. That cross-cultural trajectory made his output notable for blending Chilean concerns with the resources and styles of Soviet-era production.

Notable works and recognition

Among his best-known films is Night Over Chile (1977), a dramatic feature produced in the Soviet sphere that brought international attention. The film received the Special Prize at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival, highlighting Alarcón's presence on the festival circuit. He later served as a festival juror himself, participating on the jury at the 30th Moscow International Film Festival in 2008.
