Characteristics and beliefs

Practically, member churches held to evangelical interpretations of Scripture, a person’s confession of faith before baptism, and local decision-making. Worship styles ranged from simple evangelical services to more contemporary expressions. The union supported theological education and pastoral training and typically encouraged lay participation and missionary outreach.

History and development

The movement that became the union grew out of 19th‑century revival currents and the free‑church reaction to state church structures in Scandinavia. Over time it established congregations across urban and rural settings and engaged in social initiatives. The national body coordinated fellowship, published resources, and represented Swedish Baptists in wider ecumenical conversations and international networks.

The Baptist Union left a legacy of congregational freedom, mission focus and ongoing influence among Sweden’s free churches.
