Banglapedia is the national encyclopedia of Bangladesh, produced under the auspices of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. First published in print in 2003, it was conceived as a comprehensive reference work concentrating on topics related to Bangladesh and its historical territories. The project aimed to assemble authoritative articles on history, geography, biography, culture, economy, institutions and natural resources, and to make that material available in multiple formats for a wide audience. See the main entry for Banglapedia and the country overview at Bangladesh.

Scope and coverage

Rather than attempting to be a universal encyclopedia, Banglapedia focuses on subjects connected to the land and people of Bangladesh. Its editorial definition of the scope of "Bangladesh" is broad and historical: it encompasses the region from ancient eastern India through periods often referred to as Suba Bangla, Shahi Bangalah, Mughal Suba Bangla, the Bengal Presidency and subsequent political formations such as Bengal Province, East Bengal and East Pakistan, up to the independent state established in 1971. This extended geographical and temporal frame allows articles to treat cultural continuities, administrative changes and long-term environmental developments. The encyclopedia is published in both the Bangla language and English; see the Bangla edition here and the English edition here.

Format and organization

The printed edition was released as a multi-volume work, with individual volumes of substantial length (volumes on the order of several hundred pages) and an ambition to be periodically revised. In addition to the print set, Banglapedia has been issued on CD-ROM and made accessible online, allowing for broader distribution and later updates. Entries are typically arranged alphabetically, and articles vary from short definitions to longer, signed essays that include bibliographic references. Typical subject areas include:

  • History and political developments
  • Biographies of notable figures in public life, culture and science
  • Geography, ecology and the physical environment
  • Language, literature, religion and cultural practices
  • Institutions, law, economy and social indicators

History and editorial process

The encyclopedia was prepared by a large team of scholars, editors and contributors coordinated by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. The first print edition was issued in January 2003, and the society indicated plans for regular updates to reflect new research and developments. Articles were commissioned from experts in relevant fields and reviewed by editorial committees; the intent was to establish a national reference that could support education, scholarship and public understanding.

Uses, significance and reception

Banglapedia serves as a central reference for students, teachers, researchers and policy makers interested in Bangladesh. It has been used in classrooms, libraries and research projects as a consolidated source on national topics, and its bilingual availability broadens access. At the same time, like many national encyclopedias, it has drawn scholarly attention and discussion regarding editorial choices, the framing of historical narratives and the balance among competing interpretations. Readers interested in older administrative divisions and colonial-era contexts may consult entries that refer to the Bengal Presidency and related terms for historical background.

Limitations and future directions

Any single reference work is necessarily selective, and Banglapedia reflects both the strengths and the limits of its editorial program. Ongoing updates, expanded online tools and contributions from a wider range of specialists can help the encyclopedia remain current and balanced. For those who consult Banglapedia, it is advisable to use it alongside specialized monographs, primary documents and peer-reviewed articles when undertaking detailed research.
