Landscape and character

The district contains two contrasting but interconnected landscapes: the Elbe Sandstone Mountains—often called Saxon Switzerland—with steep rock formations, deep gorges and scenic viewpoints; and the Osterzgebirge, the lower slopes of the Ore Mountains featuring forested hills, mining heritage and winter recreation areas. The Elbe river corridor is a cultural and transport axis, while the surrounding hills provide opportunities for hiking, climbing and nature conservation.

History and development

Human settlement and land use in the region go back many centuries. The Ore Mountains shaped a mining-based economy in earlier times, while the sandstone region developed a tradition of tourism and rock climbing from the 19th century onward. The 2008 administrative reform combined neighbouring districts to improve public administration and regional planning.

Economy, tourism and culture

Tourism is a major economic driver: attractions include the Bastei rock formations, the Königstein fortress and networks of trails and climbing routes. Local industry comprises small and medium enterprises, forestry and services supporting visitors. Cross-border links with the Czech Republic support cultural exchange and outdoor tourism in adjoining mountain areas.
