Overview

Royal Jordanian is the flag carrier airline of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It began operations in 1963 under the name Alia Airlines and has since developed into a full-service carrier with a principal hub in Amman. The airline provides scheduled passenger and cargo services linking Jordan with destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Characteristics and network

Royal Jordanian operates a mixed fleet of narrow-body and wide-body jet aircraft suitable for short- and long-haul flights. Its route network combines regional frequencies to nearby capitals with longer international services that connect Amman to major global cities. Typical activities include:

  • Regular scheduled passenger flights serving business and leisure travellers
  • Long-haul services linking Jordan to intercontinental markets
  • Cargo and belly-hold freight operations supporting trade and relief missions

History and development

The carrier was established in 1963 and later adopted the Royal Jordanian name as it expanded and modernized. Over decades it has refreshed its fleet, updated onboard products and adjusted routes to meet changing demand. The airline is integrated into the global aviation system through partnerships and alliances and continues to evolve with industry trends.

Services and partnerships

Passengers typically experience a multi-class cabin layout on longer sectors, airport lounges at the main hub and a range of ancillary services. The airline maintains codeshare agreements and participates in an alliance to extend its worldwide connectivity; it is a member of Oneworld. Frequent flyers can earn and redeem benefits through the carrier’s loyalty programme and partner networks.

Royal Jordanian’s main operational base and transfer point is centered in Amman; travelers often route through this hub when connecting between regions. The airline plays a domestic and international role in promoting tourism, business links and cultural exchange for Jordan.

Notable points: it is the national airline of Jordan, it began as Alia Airlines in 1963, and its principal hub is in Amman (see main hub and local information at Amman). As an alliance member and regional connector, Royal Jordanian continues to serve as a key transport link for the country.
