Ideology and platform

Balad combines several ideological currents. Its declared positions include secularism, social democracy, Arab nationalism and pan-Arab cultural solidarity, together with an opposition to Zionism as a political ideology. The party emphasizes civil and political equality for Arab citizens of Israel, protection of cultural and linguistic rights, and recognition of Palestinian national identity. Balad was founded in 1995 by Arab intellectuals and activists who sought a distinct political vehicle to represent Arab citizens and to press for national recognition and equality within the Israeli political framework. Over subsequent decades the party has been led by various public figures and activists; as of recent years the political leader is Sami Abu Shehadeh. Balad has sometimes faced legal and political challenges in Israel because of its platform and rhetoric; at the same time it has maintained a presence in the Knesset by winning seats in some election cycles.

Electoral activity and alliances

Balad has participated in multiple Knesset elections, sometimes on its own and sometimes as part of broader Arab party alliances. In the 24th Knesset the party held one seat, as recorded in official tallies (24th Knesset results). To increase political influence and to cross electoral thresholds, Balad has often joined electoral coalitions. Notably, Balad has cooperated with other Arab parties such as Hadash and Ta'al under joint lists.
