Ronald Paul Isaac Talakoski (June 1, 1962 – July 6, 2009) was a Canadian athlete and public servant. He played professionally as a professional ice hockey right winger and appeared in nine games at the top level with the National Hockey League franchise the New York Rangers. After retiring from hockey he became a long-serving firefighter in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Playing career
Talakoski developed as a player at the University of Manitoba, where he spent four years with the university program before turning professional. Undrafted by the NHL, he signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers in October 1986 and split his first season between the major-league club and its minor-league affiliates. He played three NHL games in his initial season and a further six the following year.
- University of Manitoba — collegiate development and exposure.
- October 1986 — signed with the New York Rangers as a free agent, beginning his rookie campaign.
- AHL and IHL assignments — most of his professional ice time came in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League.
- 1987–88 season — six NHL appearances and a productive IHL year, scoring 24 goals for the Colorado Rangers.
- Retirement from professional play shortly after the 1987–88 season.
Although his tenure at the NHL level was brief, Talakoski’s path—university hockey to professional tryout and short stints in the NHL—reflects a common route for many Canadian players in the 1980s who combined education and competitive play before attempting a pro career. His most sustained scoring success came in the IHL, where he was able to contribute offensively.
Post-playing life and public service
Following retirement from hockey, Talakoski returned to his home region and served as a firefighter with Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Services for 18 years. He became known locally not only as a former professional athlete but as a first responder in the community, balancing the profile of an ex-player with steady municipal service.
Illness and death
In July 2009 Talakoski was reported missing from his residence and, after a short search, was found deceased near Pier 3 in Thunder Bay. Reports at the time indicated he had been suffering from Shy–Drager syndrome, a historical name for a neurological disorder now commonly grouped under multiple system atrophy (MSA), which involves progressive dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and motor control. Public accounts from the period describe the medical condition but do not attribute his death to a single confirmed cause in widely available public records.
Talakoski’s life is often recalled in two parts: as an athlete who reached the NHL for a brief period and as a long-serving municipal firefighter. His story is cited in local histories and remembrances as an example of a sports figure who continued to contribute to his community in a civic role after his playing days ended.
