Rolle (former district, canton of Vaud)

Geography and character

Located along the shores of Lake Geneva, the district combined lakeside promenades, terraced vineyards and rolling countryside. The landscape is typical of the Vaud lake shore: compact towns and villages linked by main roads and regional rail, with agricultural land (notably vineyards) on the slopes above the lake.

Administrative history

As part of a canton-wide reorganization of administrative districts, the District of Rolle was dissolved in 2006. Most of its communes were incorporated into the enlarged Nyon District. One exception was the municipality of Allaman, which became part of the Morges District. These changes were intended to streamline local administration and better reflect commuting and service patterns in the region.

Economy, transport and culture

The economy of the former district combined local services, small-scale agriculture (especially vineyards), tourism and commuter activity toward larger centres such as Lausanne and Geneva. Transport links include regional rail lines along the lakeshore and road connections that serve both residents and visitors. Rolle itself preserves historic architecture and a small castle, and functions as a local market and cultural centre.

• Allaman – transferred to Morges District during the 2006 reorganization.
• Mont-sur-Rolle – one of the wine-producing villages typical of La Côte.

Legacy

Although the District of Rolle no longer exists as an administrative unit, the towns and villages that composed it retain a shared cultural and economic identity tied to the lake and the vineyards. The reorganization changed administrative oversight but the area's landscape, traditions and role within the canton of Vaud remain prominent for residents and visitors alike.
