Accession and limited authority

He became emperor in 1837 at a time when the imperial title was largely ceremonial. Although based in Delhi, his role was constrained: administrative and military control rested with British and local rulers. Nonetheless the emperor retained symbolic importance among many Indians and in the cultural life of the capital.

Role in the 1857 uprising and downfall

During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Delhi insurgents proclaimed Bahadur Shah Zafar as a focal leader around whom anti-British forces rallied. After British forces recaptured Delhi, he was arrested, tried by a military commission for his association with the rebellion, and subsequently exiled. His removal marked the practical end of the Mughal dynasty.

Exile, death and personal work

Following his trial he was sent into exile in Rangoon (now Yangon), where he died in 1862. Apart from his political status, Bahadur Shah Zafar is remembered as an Urdu and Persian poet and a Sufi-influenced cultural figure; his verses reflect personal melancholy, spiritual themes and the decline of his court.
