Revolution Studios is an American independent production company established on January 12, 2000 by producer and executive Joe Roth. Based in Los Angeles, the company developed, financed and produced commercial feature films and television projects aimed at mainstream audiences. It built a recognizable catalog during the 2000s, stepped back from active production in 2007, and returned to film production in 2017.

Origins and development

Joe Roth founded the company with the intent of combining independent-style financing flexibility with the marketing reach typical of major studios. Revolution Studios operated by assembling production financing, hiring established creative teams, and partnering with larger distributors to place its projects in theaters and on television. Over its initial run the company became known for producing widely released titles across multiple genres.

Business model and output

Revolution focused on commercial entertainment: action, comedy, drama and family films, often aiming at broad box-office appeal. The company both originated projects and co-produced films with other companies. For television, Revolution developed and packaged series and pilots for network and cable partners. In general terms, its activities included development, production management, and the sale or licensing of finished films and series to distributors and broadcasters.

Library, distribution and hiatus

Like many independent producers, Revolution accumulated a library of titles whose long-term value derived from licensing, home-video and later streaming rights. Distribution for individual releases was typically handled through agreements with larger studios and distributors rather than in-house release. After several years of production activity the company reduced output and effectively ceased active new production in 2007, while its existing catalog continued to be monetized.

Return to production and legacy

Revolution re-emerged as an active producer in the late 2010s, returning to theatrical releases with projects such as xXx: Return of Xander Cage in 2017. The revival underscored how film production companies can pause and later resume activity to take advantage of new financing models and distribution windows. Today Revolution is regarded as an example of an independent production firm that combined studio-level ambition with entrepreneurial financing and licensing strategies.
