René Ballet (1928–2017): French journalist, novelist and communist

Life and early years

Ballet was born in Saint-Étienne, a city with an industrial and working-class history, and spent his childhood in Grenoble. During the turbulence of mid-20th century Europe he is recorded as having joined the French Resistance during World War II. Later in life he lived in Vanves, a suburb of Paris where he continued his professional and political activity.

Career in public service and journalism

In 1961 Ballet began working as a civil servant in Paris, first in areas connected with finance administration and subsequently within national education. His experience as a public servant informed both his political outlook and his writing. From 1978 he contributed to L'Humanité, the prominent French newspaper historically associated with the French Communist movement, where he combined reportage, commentary and cultural criticism.

Writing and themes

Over his lifetime Ballet authored an extensive body of work including fourteen novels and thirty-five essays. His writing often explored social themes, political commitment and the everyday lives of people in postwar France. He wrote both fiction and non-fiction, and his essays engaged with contemporary debates in politics and education.

Politics and legacy

Ballet was an active member of the French Communist Party and remained publicly identified with communist ideas throughout his career. His journalism, novels and essays form part of a broader tradition of French left-wing intellectual life in the second half of the 20th century. He died on 2 January 2017 at the age of 88.
