René Hausman (21 February 1936 – 28 April 2016) was a Belgian artist and writer whose work blended comic art, illustration and folklore. Born in Verviers, he became known across Belgium and beyond for short, often dark fairy-tale stories presented in a comic or illustrated format. His best-known long work, Laïyna, showcased his gift for atmospheric storytelling and detailed natural settings and remains a reference point for readers of comic books and illustrated tales.

Style and recurring themes
Hausman’s imagery frequently features animals, plants and the shadowed corners of rural life. He drew on local legends and the landscapes of the Ardennes to create scenes that feel both familiar and uncanny. Because of this connection to regional lore he was widely nicknamed the "Bard of the Ardennes", a phrase that also points to the cultural role his art played in preserving and reworking folktale material from the Ardennes region.
Characteristic elements of his approach include:

- a tone that often mixes whimsy with melancholy;

He died in Antwerp on 28 April 2016 of heart failure, leaving a legacy celebrated in exhibitions and reprints of his work.
