Career and principal activities

De Leeuw combined several roles throughout his career: he worked as a conductor, performed as a pianist and composed music himself, identified here as a composer. In 1974 he established the Schönberg Ensemble, a group conceived to explore and perform demanding works from the 20th century and contemporary repertoire. The ensemble became a central platform for chamber‑sized performances of serial and modernist pieces.

Reinbert de Leeuw left a legacy as a determined advocate for contemporary music and a mentor to younger performers interested in modern repertoire. His work with ensembles, concert series and new commissions strengthened the infrastructure for contemporary music in the Netherlands and elsewhere. He is remembered for rigorous musical intelligence, a distinct interpretive voice and a lifelong commitment to making 20th‑ and 21st‑century music audible and intelligible to audiences.
