Regent's Park

Origins and development

The park occupies land that was once hunting and agricultural ground before being developed in the early 19th century as part of a masterplan associated with the Prince Regent. The scheme produced broad avenues, terraces of townhouses and a ring of parkland designed to combine picturesque planting with promenades and water features. Much of the layout visible today dates from that period and later Victorian improvements.

• Gardens: The park includes several formal garden areas, notably rose gardens and bounded walks that attract visitors in season.
• Attractions: London Zoo sits on the park's northwestern edge, and an open-air performance space, the Open Air Theatre, stages summer productions.
• Institutions and landmarks: Parts of the perimeter adjoin residential terraces and academic institutions; the park borders both Camden and Westminster.

Regent's Park has also been the scene of modern events and incidents.
