Early life and career

Steenkamp was born in Cape Town and grew up in Port Elizabeth, where she was raised in a family with an interest in equestrian pursuits — her father, Barry Steenkamp, is a horse trainer. Of European descent, her ancestry included Dutch and German roots. She trained and worked as a paralegal before moving more fully into modelling and broadcasting. In her early twenties she survived a serious horseback riding accident that resulted in a broken back; after a period of rehabilitation she relearned to walk and resumed an active public life.

Personal relationships

Steenkamp was linked romantically to several high‑profile South African sports figures during her life. She dated rugby player Francois Hougaard earlier, and later began a relationship with athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is known both as a Paralympic and an Olympic competitor. The relationship was the subject of media attention prior to the events of February 2013.

On 14 February 2013 Reeva Steenkamp was fatally shot in a residence in Pretoria. Her partner at the time, Oscar Pistorius, was arrested and charged with murder. The case drew intense local and international attention and led to a prolonged and complex series of hearings and appeals. Early court rulings included a conviction for culpable homicide in 2014, and subsequent legal proceedings produced contested judgments and sentencing decisions as the matter proceeded through higher courts. Coverage emphasized differing interpretations of the events, forensic evidence, and legal standards applied by judges and appeals panels.

Public reaction and legacy

Steenkamp's death sparked extensive public discussion in South Africa and abroad about gun ownership, domestic safety, media ethics, and the treatment of women. Tributes and memorials were offered by friends, colleagues and members of the public, and her story has remained a point of reference in conversations about violence against women and celebrity trials. Her professional work in modelling and television, as well as her earlier recovery from serious injury, are recalled alongside the circumstances that brought her into the public spotlight.
