Geography and environment

The province occupies coastal and interior terrain on Viti Levu, with a mix of lowland coastal plains, river valleys and more rugged inland hills. Coastal areas support reefs and fishing grounds, while inland areas are used for small-scale agriculture and patches of native forest. Like much of Fiji, Ra is subject to a tropical climate with a wet season that influences farming and transport.

People and administration

Ra is home to indigenous Fijian (iTaukei) communities alongside people of other ethnic backgrounds. Traditional chiefly structures and village systems remain important in social and cultural life, and local affairs are managed through a combination of village councils and the provincial council. Administratively the province is divided into nineteen districts; Vaileka functions as the main service centre for government offices, education and health services.

Economy and land use

The local economy is largely rural and diversified across subsistence and cash activities. Common livelihoods include smallholder farming of root crops and tropical fruits, yaqona (kava) cultivation, coconut and other tree crops, coastal fishing, and small-scale commerce in Vaileka. Some families supplement incomes through remittances and seasonal labour in larger towns. Conservation of coastal and forest resources is increasingly a concern for sustainable development.

History and culture

Ra shares Fiji's broader history of indigenous settlement, European contact and colonial administration. Cultural life emphasises communal values, chiefly ceremonies, and Christian observances, with local variations in language use, arts and ceremonial practices. Visitors and researchers often note the importance of customary land tenure and village-level decision making in shaping development on the province's islands.

Transport and connections

Road links connect Vaileka with other parts of Viti Levu, allowing movement of goods and people to larger urban centres. Sea and local coastal transport remain important for some settlements.
