Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti is one of the administrative regions of Georgia, located in the country’s northwestern to north-central highlands. The regional administrative center is the town of Ambrolauri, which serves as the seat of local government and the main service hub for the area.
Administrative structure
The region is divided into four municipalities. These are:
- Ambrolauri municipality (centered on the town of Ambrolauri)
- Lentekhi municipality
- Oni municipality
- Tsageri municipality
Historical and physical geography
The modern region brings together the historical provinces of Racha, Lechkhumi and Kvemo (Lower) Svaneti. It is predominantly mountainous, forming part of the Greater Caucasus and the adjacent ranges. Valleys carved by rivers such as tributaries of the Rioni provide the principal settlement corridors and agricultural land.
Governance and neighbouring areas
The territory of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti is administered by the central Georgian authorities. Some neighbouring parts of northern Georgia are affected by the presence of the breakaway entity of South Ossetia, but the day-to-day governance of this region remains under Georgian control.
Economy and land use
Local livelihoods are largely based on mountain agriculture, livestock, forestry and small-scale industry; hydropower and seasonal tourism have become more important in recent decades. Mountain scenery, traditional villages and winter conditions attract visitors interested in hiking, culture and nature.
