Rahimyar Khan District (Urdu: ضلع رحیم یار خان) is an administrative district in southern Punjab, Pakistan. The city of Rahimyar Khan serves as the district capital and principal urban centre. Located near the transition between the irrigated plains of central Punjab and the drier lowlands to the south, the district combines intensive farmland and more arid tracts, with settlement and land use strongly shaped by irrigation availability.

Geography and climate

The district occupies predominantly flat to gently undulating countryside. Where canal water or reliable groundwater are available, soils support intensive cropping; beyond those areas the landscape becomes more semi-arid. Summers are typically very hot and dry, while winters are milder. Seasonal monsoon rains and the managed canal network both influence agricultural cycles and water resources.

Administration and population

Administratively, Rahimyar Khan District is divided into several tehsils and local councils; tehsils commonly cited include Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Khanpur and Liaquatpur. The population is diverse in language and culture: Saraiki and Punjabi are widely spoken alongside Urdu as a national lingua franca. The majority of inhabitants follow Islam; local towns and villages maintain distinct social and cultural traditions.

Economy and transport

Agriculture is the dominant economic activity where irrigation permits. Important crops include wheat, cotton and sugarcane, and fruit cultivation is significant in suitable tracts. Small and medium industries, such as textile-related enterprises and sugar processing, are concentrated near urban centres. The district lies on important north–south transport corridors: major road and rail routes link Rahimyar Khan with other parts of the country and facilitate trade and movement of agricultural produce.

History, society and services

The area has long-standing settlement and trading links with neighbouring districts and regions. Over the 20th century, expansion of irrigation and transport infrastructure contributed to urban growth and commercial development. Like many districts, Rahimyar Khan faces development challenges such as balancing urban growth with rural needs; education, health and basic services vary between urban and rural areas, with ongoing local and provincial efforts to expand access.

Notable features

  • Strategic crossroads position: proximity to provincial boundaries gives the district a role in regional transport and trade.
  • Cultural diversity: linguistic and cultural influences from central and southern Punjab shape local life.
  • Agricultural base: irrigation-supported cropping and related industries are central to the local economy.
