A provisional designation is a temporary label given to a newly discovered celestial object to identify it unambiguously while follow‑up observations determine its orbit and nature. These labels allow astronomers to record and share observations of astronomical objects without confusion, to link separate sightings of the same body, and to give credit to discoverers before a permanent identifier is assigned.

How the system works

Different classes of objects use related but distinct provisional schemes. In general a designation encodes the date (often the year) of discovery plus a code that orders discoveries within a time interval.   • Minor planets (asteroids): usually a year plus a letter‑based sequence, often seen in forms like "2021 AB" while awaiting final numbering.
  • Comets: include prefixes indicating status (for example active, periodic or lost), the year, a discovery code and often the discoverer or survey name — for example C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) is a familiar instance.
  • Transient events (supernovae): use a short form beginning with "SN" followed by the year and a letter sequence, e.g. "SN 2020abc".
  • Planetary satellites: newly reported moons are given provisional tags that reference the host planet and discovery year until their orbits are confirmed.

Process from provisional to permanent

After the provisional label is issued, follow‑up astrometry and observations refine the object's orbit. When observations cover enough of its path to predict future positions reliably, the object may be assigned a permanent catalog number and becomes eligible for a formal name under the rules of international committees. Many minor bodies, however, remain numbered but unnamed because of the sheer volume of discoveries.

History and practical importance

Provisional designation schemes evolved as observational astronomy produced large numbers of discoveries; standardization reduced confusion and duplication. The practice is an essential part of modern survey science: wide‑field surveys report hundreds or thousands of new detections, and provisional names provide a shared shorthand for follow‑up teams.
