Initially called Happy Go Lucky, the members adopted the name Protest the Hero in 2002 and released an early EP, Search for the Truth. Subsequent releases Fortress (2008) and Scurrilous (2011) continued to refine their technical and compositional approach while expanding their fan base through touring and festival appearances.

Crowdfunding and independent release

In 2013 Protest the Hero embraced direct-to-fan funding for their fourth studio album. Using an online crowdfunding platform they set an initial goal that was met within a short period, and the campaign ultimately raised considerably more than the target. The success of that campaign allowed the band to retain creative control over recording and distribution and is frequently cited as an example of how established independent artists can finance ambitious projects without relying exclusively on traditional labels.

Later work and reception

Following their crowdfunded release, the band continued to record and perform.
