Overview

Plastic wrap, also called cling wrap, food wrap or clingfilm, is a very thin, flexible sheet of plastic used to cover food and containers to slow drying and spoilage. It adheres by surface tension and slight static cling, forming a close seal that limits air exchange and contamination. Widely sold on rolls with a built-in cutting edge, it is a common item in homes, restaurants and food-service operations.

Materials and characteristics

Several polymers have been used to make plastic wrap and each gives different properties:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) — provides good cling and transparency; commonly used in earlier formulations.
  • Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) — less tacky than PVC but more flexible and often cheaper; many modern wraps are made from polyethylene blends.
  • Other materials — some products used polyvinylidene chloride (PVdC) for strong barrier properties; formulations have shifted over time for cost and regulatory reasons.

Typical attributes include clarity, stretchability, barrier to moisture and some gases, and lightweight convenience. Not all wraps perform the same: cling, puncture resistance and heat tolerance vary by composition and thickness.

History and development

Plastic wraps emerged in the mid-20th century as commercial plastics became widely available. Early products relied on materials that offered excellent cling and barrier qualities. Over time manufacturers adjusted recipes to balance performance, price and safety, and to respond to health and environmental regulation. A well-known brand that used PVdC in the past later changed to polyethylene-based formulations.

Uses and examples

Primary uses center on food preservation: wrapping leftovers, covering bowls, protecting sandwich and produce, and securing items during storage or transport. Food-service and retail sectors use plastic wrap to display and protect prepared foods and packaged goods. Because it reduces food spoilage and exposure, plastic wrap can, in many cases, reduce net food waste when used appropriately.

Safety, environmental concerns and alternatives

Concerns include chemical migration into hot or fatty foods, microplastic generation, and persistence in the environment. Manufacturers and regulators advise following product labeling for microwave use and heating. Disposal and recycling are problematic: thin film often contaminates curbside recycling streams and is rarely accepted in standard bins.

  • Alternatives: reusable silicone lids and wraps, beeswax-coated cloths, glass or stainless-steel containers, and compostable wraps for some uses.
  • Practical tips: avoid direct contact between hot oily food and wrap unless the product explicitly permits it; use airtight rigid containers for long-term storage.

Plastic wrap remains a convenient tool for food protection, but consumers and institutions increasingly weigh convenience against environmental impact and choose alternatives or use it selectively to reduce waste.
