Geography and communities

Located in the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska, the area included islands, waterways and coastal terrain typical of the Inside Passage. Before June 1, 2008, the unit was known as the Wrangell–Petersburg Census Area. That designation changed when Wrangell incorporated as a city-and-borough, removing itself from the combined census area.
