Characteristics and layout

The track combines fast straights, sweeping high-speed turns and a distinctive stadium section that passes through the Foro Sol baseball and music stadium. Its altitude—well over two thousand metres above sea level—affects car performance, notably aerodynamic downforce and engine behaviour, which makes setup and strategy unusually important. Over the decades the layout has been altered several times to meet evolving safety standards and competition requirements; however, its mix of technical corners and long acceleration zones continues to challenge drivers.

History and development

Completed in the early 1960s, the circuit staged its first international races soon after opening and became the regular home of the Mexican Grand Prix. The event appeared on the Formula One calendar during two extended periods in the 1960s–70s and again in the 1980s–90s, before the venue underwent substantial renovation and modernization in the 21st century ahead of a renewed return to the world championship. Throughout its history the Autódromo has seen changes to its safety infrastructure and spectator facilities, reflecting broader advances in circuit design and event management.

Events and uses

Beyond Formula One, the venue has hosted touring cars, sports car series, stock-car races and other international competitions, and it has been used for non-racing events such as concerts and public gatherings in the adjacent stadium. Notable international series that have visited include American stock-car races and various sports-car and single-seater categories. The circuit's varied calendar helps maintain its role as a multipurpose sporting complex.
