Notable stars and objects

The constellation contains a number of stars designated by Bayer and Flamsteed letters. The brightest star is Alpha Pavonis, commonly called Peacock, followed by other named or cataloged stars such as Beta, Gamma and Delta Pavonis. Beyond individual stars, Pavo hosts several interesting deep-sky objects for amateur and professional observers, including bright globular clusters and galaxies that are accessible with modest telescopes.

History and naming

Pavo first appeared on celestial charts compiled by Dutch cartographers who used observations from southern voyages. These modern constellations were published on globes and atlases in the late 1500s and early 1600s and later adopted into standard star catalogs. The peacock motif was chosen to reflect European fascination with colorful and exotic birds encountered or reported during exploration.

Viewing and significance

Pavo is primarily visible from the Southern Hemisphere and low northern latitudes; from many northern locations it never rises above the horizon. Observers in southern latitudes can find Pavo near other modern southern constellations. It has practical value for navigation and for locating southern deep-sky targets, and a few of its stars are of astrophysical interest as nearby, Sun-like, or high-proper-motion objects.
