Characteristics

Papillons are compact and fine-boned, but not fragile. Their coat is long, silky and usually white with patches of color; common markings include pied patterns in white combined with sable, black, tan or red. The breed is best known for two ear types: the erect, fringed ears called "butterfly" ears and the dropped-ear variety known as the Phalène ("moth").
