Ovipositor: insect egg-laying organ and its forms

An ovipositor is a rear appendage in female insects (and some other animals) used to lay eggs. It varies from a simple tube to a piercing or saw-like tool and is sometimes modified as a sting.

An ovipositor is the external organ used by female insects, and by a few other animal groups, to deposit eggs. Typically located at the rear of the abdomen, it often appears as a tubular structure that directs eggs to an appropriate site. In most insects the ovipositor results from the fusion and modification of posterior abdominal appendages. Ovipositors have evolved into several distinct functional types depending on lifestyle and host choice. Common categories include:

  • Non-penetrating tubes or grooves for depositing eggs on surfaces or vegetation (surface oviposition).
