Oudsbergen is a municipality in northeastern Belgium, located in the province of Limburg. It was established on 1 January 2019 through the fusion of the former municipalities Opglabbeek and Meeuwen-Gruitrode. The new municipality covers about 116.24 km² and has a population in the order of 23,000 people, giving it a character that combines several villages, hamlets and open countryside.

Geography and landscape

Oudsbergen lies within the rolling, lowland region of Belgian Limburg. The territory includes a mix of arable fields, patches of woodland and heath-like landscapes typical of this part of Flanders. Local roads and cycling routes connect the constituent villages and provide access to nearby towns and cross-border links into the Netherlands. The setting is generally rural with clusters of built-up areas where most services are concentrated.

History and formation

The municipality was formed as part of a local-level consolidation: the separate administrations of Opglabbeek and Meeuwen-Gruitrode agreed to merge and create a single municipal council and mayoralty from 2019. This administrative change aimed to streamline services, improve planning and strengthen capacity for local projects. Each former municipality retains its historical identity in the names of neighborhoods and parishes.

Economy, transport and services

The local economy is typical of many small Belgian municipalities: a mixture of agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises, local commerce and commuting to larger employment centers. Public services such as primary schools, community centres and municipal facilities are distributed across the former towns. Road links and public transport services connect residents to regional hubs for education, specialist healthcare and industry.

Recreation, nature and culture

Residents and visitors find opportunities for walking, cycling and enjoying natural areas; cultural life is centred on village festivals, local clubs and heritage sites maintained by community organizations. Conservation of green spaces and promotion of outdoor recreation are common municipal priorities, reflecting the importance of landscape and local quality of life.

Governance and notable facts

Oudsbergen is governed by an elected municipal council and an executive led by a mayor. The creation of the municipality has allowed a single planning and development framework to guide housing, infrastructure and environmental initiatives across the combined territory.
