Geography and population

The area had a largely rural character with mixed farmland, patches of conifer and deciduous forest, heathland and small waterways. In 2007 the recorded population was about 12,611 inhabitants. The local environment is typical of northeastern Limburg and attracts outdoor activities such as cycling, walking and nature observation.

History and administration

Administratively, Meeuwen-Gruitrode functioned as an individual municipality until the end of 2018. On 1 January 2019 it was merged with the neighbouring municipality of Opglabbeek to form the new municipality of Oudsbergen. Before the merger it was often described in official sources as a former municipality after reorganization plans were confirmed. The change was part of a wider trend in Belgium of consolidating smaller local governments into larger administrative units.

Economy and local life

The local economy was dominated by agriculture, small-scale industry and services oriented to residents and visitors. Typical local features included:

• agricultural holdings and open fields,
• forests and heath used for recreation, and
• small commercial centres in the main villages.

Notable facts and legacy

Meeuwen-Gruitrode is now part of Oudsbergen, but the place names Meeuwen and Gruitrode remain in common use and in local identity. The former municipality is mentioned in provincial records and maps of the province and national overviews. Photographs and local heritage sites continue to be identified under the old name in guidebooks and community pages (Limburg-focused resources and municipal histories often reference the transition).
