Geography and administration

The area lies at about 51°02′ North, 05°35′ East and features the sandy soils and mixed forests typical of the Kempen. Before the merger it was governed as a municipal council under Belgian provincial administration and used Dutch (Flemish) as the primary language for public affairs and daily life.

History and merger

Opglabbeek developed as a local agricultural and residential community with roots stretching back several centuries in the Limburg countryside. On 1 January 2019, Opglabbeek and Meeuwen-Gruitrode were officially combined to create the new municipality of Oudsbergen. That change was part of a wider national effort to streamline local government and improve the delivery of services.

Population and economy

Population figures have varied with time; official counts recorded 9,718 inhabitants in 2007. The local economy historically relied on agriculture, small businesses and services for surrounding communities. The region is also known for outdoor recreation, woodland management and small-scale industry typical of Limburg's rural municipalities.
