Augustine Philip Mahiga (28 August 1945 – 1 May 2020) was a Tanzanian career diplomat and politician. Born in Dar es Salaam when the territory was known as Tanganyika, Mahiga was a long-serving member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and held senior posts in Tanzania's foreign service. He is best known for his tenure as his country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2003 to 2010 and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania from 2015 to 2019 (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Career and responsibilities

As Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mahiga led Tanzania's mission in New York, participating in multilateral diplomacy on development, regional security and human rights. In that capacity he engaged with UN agencies, represented Tanzania at General Assembly meetings and worked with other member states on issues affecting East Africa. Later, as Foreign Minister, he directed Tanzania's bilateral relations, regional cooperation within the East African Community and Tanzania's representation abroad.

Work and approach

Mahiga was widely regarded as a pragmatic diplomat who drew on decades of experience in government. His work emphasized constructive engagement, Africa's role in international forums and the practical management of foreign relations.
