Odd Bondevik (20 June 1941 – 6 September 2014) was a Norwegian theologian and senior cleric in the Church of Norway. He served as Bishop of the Diocese of Møre from 17 November 1991 until his retirement in 2008, and acted as Preses (the presiding bishop) of the Bishops' Conference from 1998 to 2002. Born in Sauda, he spent most of his public life in ecclesiastical leadership and pastoral oversight.

Overview

Bondevik belonged to the Lutheran tradition characteristic of the Church of Norway, the country's national church for much of his ministry. His work combined parish and diocesan responsibilities with a public role in national church matters. As a diocesan bishop he combined theological guidance, pastoral care, administrative leadership and public representation of the church in regional and national contexts.

Episcopal ministry

Appointed Bishop of Møre in 1991, Bondevik oversaw a diocese on Norway’s western coast, an area marked by fjords, coastal communities and a mix of urban and rural parishes. The bishop's duties included ordaining clergy, confirming members, supervising parish activity and supporting theological education and mission within the diocese. He led clergy meetings, advised parish councils and worked to maintain doctrinal continuity while responding to pastoral needs.

Role as Preses

From 1998 to 2002 Bondevik served as Preses of the Bishops' Conference, the role that serves as the primus inter pares among Norway's bishops. The Preses chairs the conference, represents the collective episcopate in dialogue with church bodies and public institutions, and often speaks on behalf of the bishops in matters of national importance. The position is typically filled by election among the bishops for a limited term.

Context and issues

During Bondevik’s tenure the Church of Norway engaged with questions about church and state relations, responses to contemporary social developments, and internal pastoral and administrative reforms. Bishops in this period balanced maintaining theological tradition with addressing new social and ethical debates, and frequently participated in public discussion on values and community life.

Later life and legacy

After retiring in 2008 Bondevik remained a respected figure in ecclesiastical circles. His decades of service were remembered in obituaries and memorial notices that highlighted his leadership in the Diocese of Møre and his time as Preses. He died on 6 September 2014 in Drammen at the age of 73.
