Nur Hassan Hussein (Somali: Nuur Xasan Xuseen Cadde; Arabic: نور حسن حسين‎; 16 February 1937 – 1 April 2020) was a Somali political figure and diplomat. He served as Prime Minister of Somalia from November 2007 to February 2009 and later represented Somalia as ambassador to Italy from 2009 until 2013. His career unfolded during a turbulent period for Somalia, marked by efforts to restore central institutions and engage with international partners.

Early life and public service

Born in Mogadishu, Hussein spent decades in public roles before becoming prime minister. He was widely regarded as an experienced administrator who took on responsibilities in the Transitional Federal Government era, when rebuilding state functions and managing security challenges were central concerns. His Somali and Arabic names reflect common naming practices and linguistic connections in the region.

Prime ministership (2007–2009)

Appointed in November 2007, Hussein led the national cabinet through a period of intense domestic and regional challenges. His tenure ended in February 2009 amid ongoing political transition and negotiation among Somali leaders and stakeholders.

After leaving the prime ministership, Hussein served as Somalia’s ambassador to Italy from 2009 to 2013. Death and legacy

Nur Hassan Hussein died on 1 April 2020 in Camberwell, London, of COVID-19 at the age of 83. His passing occurred during the global 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic and was reported by multiple sources. Hussein is remembered as a veteran public servant who led at a difficult moment in Somalia’s modern history and later served as a bridge to international partners.
