Nur Hassan Hussein (Somali: Nuur Xasan Xuseen Cadde; Arabic: نور حسن حسين; 16 February 1937 – 1 April 2020) was a Somali political figure and diplomat. He served as Prime Minister of Somalia from November 2007 to February 2009 and later represented Somalia as ambassador to Italy from 2009 until 2013. His career unfolded during a turbulent period for Somalia, marked by efforts to restore central institutions and engage with international partners.
Early life and public service
Born in Mogadishu, Hussein spent decades in public roles before becoming prime minister. He was widely regarded as an experienced administrator who took on responsibilities in the Transitional Federal Government era, when rebuilding state functions and managing security challenges were central concerns. Prime ministership (2007–2009)
Appointed in November 2007, Hussein led the national cabinet through a period of intense domestic and regional challenges. Nur Hassan Hussein died on 1 April 2020 in Camberwell, London, of COVID-19 at the age of 83. His passing occurred during the global 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic and was reported by multiple sources. Hussein is remembered as a veteran public servant who led at a difficult moment in Somalia’s modern history and later served as a bridge to international partners.
