Overview

The Northwest Arctic Borough is an administrative region in northwest Alaska, created in 1986 and anchored by the town of Kotzebue. The borough covers a vast area of Arctic and subarctic terrain and is home to a predominantly Alaska Native population that maintains many subsistence traditions.

Geography and communities

The borough extends from coastal shores on the Chukchi Sea inland across tundra, river valleys and low mountains. Winters are long and cold, summers are short and cool. Settlements are small and widely spaced; the borough seat and largest community is Kotzebue, which functions as the regional hub for health, education and transportation.

Population and settlements

Residents live in a mixture of villages, seasonal camps and Kotzebue. Many communities are predominantly Inupiat and rely on hunting, fishing and gathering for much of their food. Limited road connections mean travel is commonly by air, boat or snowmachine within the region.

Economy and services

Local livelihoods combine subsistence activities with wage employment in public services, schools and resource development. One of the borough's most significant economic contributors is the Red Dog zinc-lead mine, which provides employment and revenue while also raising environmental and social considerations. Regional organizations provide health, education and public safety services.

History, government and culture

The area has been inhabited by Inupiat peoples for millennia. Modern borough government, established in 1986, manages local services, planning and coordination among villages. Inupiat culture remains a central part of community life, with language, crafts and seasonal harvests shaping social and economic patterns.

Notable facts and resources
