Atri — Vedic sage and one of the Saptarishi

Texts and Vedic role

In Vedic literature Atri is associated with a family or school that contributed hymns and ritual material; several hymns in the Rigveda are attributed to him or to his descendants. The Atri tradition gave rise to a recognized gotra (lineage) and to teachers who preserved liturgical and exegetical practices. As with other ancient rishis, Atri functions both as an authorial name in sacred poetry and as an archetypal teacher in later commentarial traditions.

Mythology and family

Puranic and epic narratives expand the Vedic portrait with legendary episodes. Atri is commonly paired with his wife Anasuya, famed for her chastity and hospitality; some accounts describe their son Dattatreya, who is worshipped in parts of India as an ascetic deity or avatara. Many of these stories emphasize moral virtues, household piety, and the transmission of spiritual knowledge from teacher to pupil.

Astronomy and symbolism

Ancient Hindu astronomical and astrological traditions often linked the Saptarishi with visible stars or constellations. Early commentators identified the seven sages with particular stars in the sky, treating them as a group of guiding figures among the fixed stars. These identifications are typically connected with the larger constellation sometimes called the Great Bear and with other stellar clusters; their wives are traditionally associated with the Pleiades. Such mappings reflect an older tendency to read cosmology and genealogy together in mnemonic ways and are discussed in studies of ancient astrology and star lore (stars).

Legacy and distinctions

Atri's importance is visible today in ritual practice, genealogical identity (Atreya and related gotras), and local temple traditions. The exact list and identity of the Saptarishi vary between texts and epochs, so Atri's portrayal may differ in detail from one source to another. Nonetheless, across Vedic hymns, Puranic stories, and celestial symbolism he remains a central exemplar of the sage-teacher in South Asian religious culture.
