Nawshirwan Mustafa (born 22 December 1944 in Sulaymaniyah, then part of Iraq) was a Kurdish political leader best known for founding the Movement for Change (commonly called Gorran). He served as the movement's General Coordinator from its emergence in 2009 until his death in May 2017. Mustafa became widely recognised as the leading voice of formal opposition within the Kurdistan Region, advocating institutional reform and a challenge to the established party order.

Political career and leadership

Mustafa rose to prominence in Kurdish politics over several decades. In 2009 he helped launch the Movement for Change (Bizûtinewey Gorran) as an organisational response to grievances about governance, patronage and corruption. Under his coordination Gorran quickly gathered support in urban centres and offered a sustained critique of the dominant parties in the Kurdistan Regional Government. The movement's growth altered the region's political balance and highlighted public demand for accountability and reform.

Positions and influence

Throughout his leadership Mustafa emphasized transparency, decentralisation of power, judicial independence and civil liberties. He framed Gorran as a civic alternative rather than a traditional clan- or family-based party, and used plainspoken rhetoric to connect with voters disillusioned by entrenched elites. His challenge pushed issues of corruption and public services into mainstream regional debate and influenced subsequent political contests and coalitions.

Background and split from established parties

Before founding Gorran, Mustafa had long-standing ties to mainstream Kurdish political movements. Dissatisfaction with internal party practices and a belief that change required a new organisation led him and other activists to break with older structures. The Movement for Change therefore combined veteran political experience with a reformist agenda that appealed both to younger activists and to parts of the electorate seeking alternatives.

Death and legacy

Nawshirwan Mustafa died in Sulaymaniyah on 19 May 2017 after a battle with lung cancer. His passing was widely noted across Kurdish society and in regional politics. Supporters credit him with opening space for dissent and pushing reformist ideas into the political mainstream; critics argue about the movement's later developments and its long-term effectiveness. In either view, his role in breaking the long-standing two-party dominance in the Kurdistan Region remains a defining part of his legacy.
