Background and education

Samad grew up in Sylhet and later moved to Dhaka for higher education and political engagement. He was enrolled in law studies at Jagannath University while participating in local youth organisations, including the Sylhet Bangabanghu National Youth Parishad. He also wrote and spoke publicly about secularism and reform, and maintained an online presence as a blogger and commentator (blog profile).

Activism and threats

He was associated with Ganajagaran Mancha, a civic platform that emerged to press for secular and judicial accountability. Because of his outspoken criticism of religious fundamentalism, Samad faced threats over several years. In 2013 his name reportedly appeared on a list circulated by Islamist extremists that identified 84 bloggers and online activists as targets, contributing to a climate of intimidation in Bangladesh (Sylhet context, national context).
