Overview

Muskingum County lies in east‑central Ohio and takes its name from the Muskingum River, which crosses the county and shaped its settlement and economy. The county contains a mix of small cities, villages and rural townships and serves as a hub for local government, education and regional commerce.

History

European‑American settlement increased in the early 19th century as Ohio was organized and roads, river navigation and later rail connections opened. The county developed around the Muskingum River valley; Zanesville grew into the principal town and briefly served as Ohio's state capital in the early 1810s. Place names and the county's identity reflect Native American roots and the transportation corridors that encouraged growth.

Geography and economy

The county landscape is characterized by river valleys and gentle hills. Historically commerce relied on river transport, canals and roads; today the local economy blends manufacturing, agriculture, education and service industries. Muskingum University and various cultural institutions contribute to civic life and attract visitors.
