Overview
Zanesville is a city in east‑central Ohio and serves as the county seat of Muskingum County. Zanesville was founded in the late 18th century by Ebenezer Zane, who blazed an early pioneer route known as Zane's Trace through what is now Ohio. Around 1797 Zane and his son‑in‑law John McIntire established the town where the Trace met the Muskingum River, taking advantage of river transport and overland trails. For a brief period, from 1810 to 1812, Zanesville served as the state capital of Ohio, reflecting its early political and transportation importance during the frontier era.

Zanesville is notable for two nationally recognized pieces of civil engineering. The Muskingum River Canal system and associated locks have been designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark for their 19th‑century role in inland navigation and flood control. The city's most distinctive structure is the Zanesville Y‑Bridge, a three‑way bridge that spans the Muskingum and Licking rivers at their junction. The Y‑Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains one of the few Y‑shaped bridges still in regular use in the United States.

Over the 19th and 20th centuries Zanesville developed a substantial ceramics and pottery industry and became known nationwide for pottery production. Several regional manufacturers produced decorative and utilitarian ceramics that are sought by collectors today. The city's economy combines light manufacturing, retail, public administration and service industries, while local institutions preserve historic collections and promote craft traditions.
Transportation and regional role
The historic National Road, now routed as U.S. Route 40, passes through Zanesville and helped establish the city as a stop on early east–west travel. River transport, roads and later highways have kept Zanesville connected to larger Ohio cities and to rural communities in the surrounding county. As the county seat, it houses courts and administrative offices that serve Muskingum County and nearby townships.
