Megan Nicole Kanka (December 7, 1986 – July 29, 1994) was an American child from Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, who was sexually assaulted and murdered at age seven by her neighbor, Jesse Timmendequas.
Crime and discovery
Megan was lured into the suspect's home with the promise of seeing a puppy. After she entered, the attacker assaulted her and later killed her. According to accounts from investigators, he strangled her and used a belt during the attack. Her body was placed in a toy chest and discarded in a nearby park in West Windsor, New Jersey.
Investigation and prosecution
Officers arrested Jesse Timmendequas and prosecutors charged him with multiple offenses. A jury found him guilty of kidnapping, rape, sodomy and murder. He was sentenced to death at trial; following changes to New Jersey’s capital punishment laws, that sentence was later converted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Legal and public impact
The killing prompted a statewide response. The New Jersey Legislature enacted new measures to increase supervision of convicted sex offenders, creating a statute referred to as a law that established notification requirements. The resulting policy is commonly known as Megan's Law, and it led to wider community-notification practices and registries for sex offenders in other jurisdictions.
