A minicomputer is a mid-sized, multi-user computer that historically filled the gap between mainframes and microcomputers, used widely for scientific, industrial, and business tasks before the rise of modern servers.

A minicomputer is a class of electronic computer that provided many capabilities of larger systems in a smaller, less expensive package. Emerging in the 1960s and widely used through the 1970s and 1980s, minicomputers supported multiple users, real-time control, and interactive terminals while remaining physically and economically closer to departmental rather than enterprise scale. They are sometimes called mid-range computers and are conceptually placed between the large mainframe systems and the later microcomputer class.

Minicomputers typically offered a balance of computing power, I/O capacity, and cost. Common features included:

History and development

The minicomputer era began in the mid-1960s with machines that made smaller-scale computing affordable for laboratories, universities, and businesses. Notable early examples include the DEC PDP series and similar systems from other manufacturers. These machines brought interactive computing and time-sharing to a much broader audience than had been possible with large mainframes. Over time, 16-bit and then 32-bit minicomputers increased performance and supported a growing ecosystem of operating systems and application software.

Common uses and impact

Minicomputers found roles in many areas: scientific research, process control in factories, telecommunications switching, office automation, and departmental business systems. They were widely used as small servers and as controllers for instrumentation. Their affordability and versatility helped decentralize computing resources and fostered the development of new software practices, including interactive development and multiuser operating systems.

Distinctions and legacy

Compared with a microcomputer, a minicomputer was designed for concurrent multiuser operation and heavier I/O loads; compared with a mainframe, it was less costly and smaller but offered fewer aggregated resources. As microprocessor technology advanced during the 1980s and 1990s, many functions of minicomputers were absorbed by workstation-class machines and dedicated servers. The marketplace term "minicomputer" gradually faded, replaced by "server" or "mid-range system," though the technical lineage continues in modern server architectures.
