Career and responsibilities

DeLong served more than 36 years on active duty before retiring in 2003. In his final assignment he was second-in-command at MacDill Air Force Base, supporting the regional headquarters responsible for a broad and strategically important area. As Deputy Commander he worked directly under the CENTCOM commander and helped oversee joint and combined military operations, strategic planning, and interagency coordination.

Role in major operations

From 2000 until his retirement, DeLong was a principal deputy to General Tommy Franks, the CENTCOM commander at the time. During that period CENTCOM directed major campaigns associated with the War on Terror, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. DeLong's responsibilities included contributing to operational planning, providing senior military advice, and helping synchronize efforts across service branches and allied partners.
