Career and international play

At the provincial level Purcell turned out for the Queensland Reds, a major state side within Australian rugby. He reached the international level when selected for the national team, the Wallabies, making three appearances in 1966. Gaining a cap for the Wallabies was, and remains, a significant milestone that recognised a player's form and readiness to compete in the sport's highest fixtures during the amateur era.

Playing style and positions

Purcell covered two forward roles that required different physical and technical attributes. Those roles typically demanded the following:
