Overview
Michael John Robinson (12 July 1958 – 27 April 2020) was an English-born professional footballer who later became a well-known television commentator and presenter in Spain. A forward by trade, Robinson combined a reputation for intelligent movement and work ethic on the pitch with a talent for communication off it. Born in Leicester, he spent the bulk of his playing career in England before finishing his club career in Spain and subsequently settling there.
Playing career and international football
Robinson made more than 300 official appearances in English club football, representing a sequence of five clubs in the English leagues, including a spell with Liverpool. He completed the final three seasons of his career in Spain with CA Osasuna, where he experienced Spanish football culture first-hand and prepared for life after retirement. Though born in England, Robinson qualified to represent the Republic of Ireland at senior international level and was selected for the national team during the 1980s.
Style and role
On the field Robinson played as a striker. He was admired for his positional sense, ability to link play and willingness to press defenders — qualities that made him a useful member of several first-team squads. His career bridged domestic football in England and the distinct tactical and technical demands of La Liga in Spain, offering him a wide perspective on the differing styles of the two countries.
Broadcasting and later life
After retiring as a player in 1989, Robinson settled in Spain and later became a Spanish citizen. He built a second career in media, working as a football commentator and television presenter. He became a familiar face and voice on Spanish sports programmes, known for clear analysis, warm personality and his ability to explain the game to a broad audience.
Illness, death and legacy
In December 2018 Robinson announced a diagnosis of melanoma. He continued to be remembered for his contributions both as a player and as a broadcaster after his death in Marbella on 27 April 2020 at the age of 61. Tributes noted his role in introducing English football perspectives to Spanish viewers and his successful transition from professional sport to media.
