Masaryk University

History and name

The university was founded in the aftermath of World War I and the creation of Czechoslovakia, reflecting nation-building efforts and the desire to expand Czech higher education beyond Prague. It was named in honour of the country's first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, a philosopher and statesman who advocated for broader access to Czech-language instruction. During the mid-20th century, between about 1960 and 1990, the institution was officially renamed after the Czech scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně; following political changes it returned to the Masaryk name.
