Early life and artistic background

Amuchástegui trained as a ballerina and maintained a close relationship with movement and music throughout her life. That dance foundation influenced the choreography and pacing of her televised lessons, which favored rhythm, posture and graceful transitions rather than purely gym-based regimens. Her professional identity blended performing arts and health instruction, a combination that made her television segments both instructive and performative.

Television career and signature programs

She rose to national prominence in the 1980s through morning programs that encouraged viewers to exercise at home. Her best known shows included:

  • Buen día Salud — a program focusing on health and practical routines for everyday wellbeing;
  • Buen Día, María — a show that mixed guided exercises with lifestyle tips, aimed primarily at morning audiences.

These formats echoed a wider international trend in which television became a vehicle for public fitness, using short, repeatable segments to reach broad audiences who might not otherwise attend studios or classes.

Music and later activities

In addition to her television work, Amuchástegui pursued musical projects. One of her better known songs, released much later in her career, was "Camino de espejos" (2006). Her interest in music complemented her dance background and provided another avenue for creative expression beyond the instructional broadcasts for which she was primarily known.

Legacy and death

Amuchástegui is remembered as a pioneer of televised fitness in Argentina, particularly for bringing movement practices into the daily routines of television viewers. She continued to be cited in discussions of media-driven health promotion and the history of daytime television in her country. María Amuchástegui died in Buenos Aires on 19 July 2017. Reports cited a stroke and lung cancer as causes associated with her passing at the age of 64.
