Manji (era) — Japanese era 1658–1661

Manji was a Japanese era name from July 1658 to April 1661, during the reign of Emperor Go-Sai in the mid-Edo period, between the Meireki and Kanbun eras.

Overview

The Manji era (万治) was a Japanese era name (nengō) that ran from July 1658 through April 1661. It falls in the early part of the Edo period and overlapped with the reign of Emperor Go-Sai (後西天皇). The era followed Meireki and preceded Kanbun.

Historical context

Manji was proclaimed in an era when the Tokugawa shogunate was consolidating political control over Japan and urban centers such as Edo (modern Tokyo) were growing rapidly. Tokugawa Ietsuna served as shogun during these years, and the national policy of regulated contact with foreign powers (often called sakoku) continued to shape diplomacy and trade.

Characteristics and events

The years of Manji were marked less by dramatic new reforms than by ongoing recovery and administration. Following large disasters and disruptions of the preceding decades, local and shogunal administrations emphasized reconstruction, policing, and the stabilization of commerce and rice markets. Court ceremonies and cultural life at the imperial court and in major cities continued under the constraints of Tokugawa governance.

Nengō system and name change

The choice and change of era names (the nengō system) in premodern Japan followed court and shogunal practice. Era names were changed for a variety of reasons, including the desire to mark auspicious beginnings, respond to disasters, or note political transitions. Manji is one link in a sequence of era names that historians use to organize chronology and official records.

Notable figures and cultural notes

While the emperor remained the symbolic head of state, real political authority rested largely with the Tokugawa shogunate. Cultural production in the mid-17th century included urban popular arts, theatre, and printing, which flourished under relative internal peace. Scholarship and courtly rites at Kyoto also continued on a more private scale during Manji.
